Students enjoy school year in building equipped with solar energy at Universal College

Since the start of the 2012-2013 school year at the Universal College in Mauritius, the 1450 students had a little surprise awaiting them. Indeed the College has recently decided to set itself up as a sustainable school model by installing a solar energy system on its rooftops. This decision echoes what is one of the College’s aims, that is not only to educate students but also to prepare them to become conscious citizens.

SOLAR-ERNTE-TECHNIK LTD (SETL) of Mauritius in association with its partner, the Swiss-based meeco Group successfully installed a 40 kWp solar photovoltaic system at the Universal College, situated 26 km north-east of the capital of Mauritius, Port Louis. This solar rooftop installation uses some of the best components in the solar industry such as 150 Wp thin film CIS Solar Frontier modules in combination with SMA Sunny 7000 HV inverters and a supporting structure by Krannich Solar. The installation is expected to generate a minimum of 72000 kWh per year, which amounts to yearly savings of approximately 7.5 tons of CO2 emissions.

“This renewable energy project at the Universal College, situated in a rather agricultural area, has contributed to grant an increased power autonomy to the school and surround the students with green solutions to today’s energy needs” notes Deven Maulloo, General Manager of SETL. “As a well established actor in the island’s energy sector, SETL has chosen to work with The meeco Group to install renewable energy where it is really needed. This is clearly a project with a direct impact on future generations in Mauritius” adds Maulloo.

Contributing to the „green“ development of Mauritius is an initiative, which both SETL and The meeco Group want to pursue since the very beginning. “While we provide top-tier materials, supplies, layout services and technical advisory services, SETL assumes the local sales and manages the professional implementation of the local installations, in the case of the Universal College, it has proven to be the right working method” explains Dieter Trutschler, Sales Director of The meeco Group.
