Groupe Filatex and The meeco Group have agreed implementation of solar power plants to feed clean energy into the island’s electricity grid
Located in the Indian Ocean, the Republic of Madagascar known for its outstanding rich biodiversity, has an excellent natural potential for solar energy thanks to its geographical position and the strong solar radiation. In order to benefit from these advantageous climate conditions and to generate reliable clean energy to feed and stabilise the national grid, Groupe Filatex and meeco have recently signed a cooperation agreement. In the initial phase, the agreement sets the basis to build, own and operate three solar energy projects: two utility-scale sun2live PV power plants with a nominal capacity of 7 MW and 8 MW, and one hybrid solar diesel project comprising of two parts each with a nominal capacity of 500 kWp.
The low electrification rate in the rural area, where only 4% of the population has access to electrical energy, is one of the main burdens impeding the economic development and the establishment of a sustainable education and healthcare system in such remote areas. Aiming to substantially improve this situation and ensure energy access for 70% of the country’s population until 2030, the government has set the target to strengthen the expansion of the renewable energy sector within a strategy paper in 2015. The Swiss-headquartered meeco Group, as an international clean energy provider, and the Malagasy Groupe Filatex have partnered to support this strategy by realising solar energy projects in one of the largest islands of the world.
Established on the island for nearly 40 years, Groupe Filatex has been successfully active in various industry divisions and is one of the leading energy producers through its subsidiary ENELEC. The company focuses on the progressive change from a fossil fuel-based energy generation towards a clean energy supply.  “We are glad and honoured about the cooperation with the renowned, internationally experienced and dedicated Malagasy business partner Groupe Filatex. Together, we strive to contribute to the expansion of clean energy in Madagascar and to establish a reliable energy supply for the population”, states Sebastian Bovensiepen, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of The meeco Group.
